The experimental animation is inspired by the classical literature -
The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka. Metamorphosis tells the story of
salesman Gregor, who is transformed into a insect inexplicably.
Kafka uses existentialism through Gregor’s transformation and his
struggles with being an insect. Despite the biological
transformation to an non-human, Gregor experienced internal
transformation back to a human and gain his individuality back by
questioning his’s existence, who was alienated and dehumanized
by the capitalist system before metamorphosis. The work critizes
how capitalist system dehumanizes and alienate individuals and
raises the importance of individuality and free will.
The animation is created to be an infinite loop, metaphoring the process of metamorphosis as both process of dehumanizing and humanizing. A digital simulation of zoetrope is also used in the animation , which is an early form of animation technology with images rotate quickly and appear to be moving images.
